Sunscreens 2017|BareMinerals Prep step|EltaMD UV Clear 46|Shiseido Wet Force Reviews

Just My Humble

Sunscreens are more difficult to be completely taken off, compare to make up. Not technically, but because at the end of the day, they are usually invisible,  leave us the illusion they are gone. Make sure at least use a micellar water to remove sunscreens, use a makeup remover for waterproof ones. Although sunscreens are generally considered as the last step of skincare, they are also the first step of makeup.  Wear sunscreens everyday? Not enough! Remove sunscreen correctly everyday, keep breakouts far far away~~Screen Shot 2017-09-19 at 11.37.34 AM.png

Sunscreen everyday

UV protection was the first concept I ever learned about skin care. Never ever left the door without sun protection since I can remembered. I’ve been continuously apply sunscreen under or without makeup since 18.

I personal prefer physical sunscreen. Chemical sunscreen has better consistency that is mostly lighter, waterier than physical sunscreen.  However better chance to irritate skin too. No matter what your preference is, for everyday anti-aging benefit, wear a broad-spectrum sunscreen that’s at least SPF 30. For outdoor activities, wear higher SPF and keep reapplying.

What am I looking for in Sunscreens?

A good sunscreen to me, first of all, must truly can protect me from UV damage.

Then goes light on skin, allow my skin to breathe. Some sunscreens are just so heavy on skin, it’s like put paste on skin.

If it goes great under makeup or has a nice tint, it can pass as A perfect one! Although if I have to choose between sunscreen and foundation, I’ll always choose sunscreen.

What about those lazy days?

Moisturizers with SPF don’t have the powerful protection that I’m looking for. So tinted sunscreen is such a great option!Make a layering cake on face everyday is just too much work. I never mix foundation with sunscreens, just to make sure sunscreen is 100% effective.

I bought   bareMineralsMineral Shield Broad Spectrum SPF 50 Daily Prep Lotion ($30/40ml) in Spring 2016. Almost done, I have other sunscreens that’s why I haven’t finish it yet. Time to repurchase. So far I really enjoyed it.

It has really good ingredients for mineral sunscreen, ingredients list:

-Titanium Dioxide 4.1%
-Zinc Oxide 23.8%

Coconut Alkanes, Caprylyl Caprylate/Caprate, Water, Squalane, Adipic Acid/Neopentyl Glycol Crosspolymer, Polyglyceryl-2 Diisostearate, Silica, Glycerin, Propanediol, Sorbitan Sesquiisostearate, Isostearic Acid, Coco-Caprylate/Caprate, Triethoxycaprylylsilane, Gentiana Urnula Flower Extract, Moringa Oleifera Seed Extract, Butylene Glycol, Magnesium Hydroxide, Sodium Citrate, Citric Acid, Polyester-1, Silica Dimethyl Silylate, Disodium Phosphate, Phenoxyethanol. May Contain: Mica, Titanium Dioxide, Iron Oxides.

It has a Sheer finish, goes smoothly. A little goes long way but for sunscreen we are not suppose to use only a little.  It claims to be “Unique, color-adapting micro-encapsulated pigments blend beautifully with your skin tone, leaving behind an invisible finish.” I don’t know if it has already adjusted to my skin tone, when I wiped it with kitchen paper there was some light beige color left. So if you are concerned with the final color, try a sample first is a safe option~

Aside from the unsure color of tint, it can pass as a light coverage foundation for sure. Color settles in 10 minutes. With a little canceler, it’s really great for everyday use. Especially in summer!

For under makeup wear, due to its sheer finish, I usually set it with some loose powder before foundation, It didn’t break down any make up yet.

Sunscreens Recommendation Top 4(Updated)

Originally I have 3 sunscreens listed as my favorites in this post. As I explored more sunscreens this summer, my list has changed, I still love Dior city defense sunscreen, but currently not using it.

I dropped Drunk Elephant Umbra off the list, because it is unstoppably balling/peeling on skin, I’ve tried all kinds of methods to work with it, nothing worked.  I have stopped using it.

Original list:

1,bareMineralsMineral Shield Broad Spectrum SPF 50 Daily Prep Lotion ($30/40ml) Still Love it!

2,Dior One Essential City Defense SPF 50 ($59/30ml): Very light watery consistency, great primer,no tint)

3,Drunk Elephant Umbra™ Sheer Physical Defense SPF 30 ($38/100ml) (double duty as moisturizer, no tint)

Updated sunscreens Top 4:

1,bareMineralsMineral Shield Broad Spectrum SPF 50 Daily Prep Lotion ($30/40ml) Still made the cut, because it has great ingredients, and convenient neutral  tint.

2, EltaMD UV Clear Broad-Spectrum SPF 46 (1.7 oz.)    $32.5/48g

3, Shiseido Ultimate Sun Protection Lotion WetForce for Sensitive Skin and Children SPF 50+ $42/100ml

4, Dior One Essential City Defense SPF 50 ($59/30ml): Very light watery consistency, great primer,no tint) Currently not using it, but plan to repurchase.

2, EltaMD UV Clear Broad-Spectrum SPF 46 (1.7 oz.)    $32.5/48g Please keep in mind, there are a lot unauthorized retailer+online retailed are selling EltaMD products. I bought it from, an authorized online retailer.See Elta MD statement here: Unauthorized-Resellers-Web-Statement-7.17

Pros: 1, It features with a lot good ingredients such as Hyaluronic Acid, Vitamin E, Niacinamide, Lactic Acid, Zinc Oxide. It does Help with clearing my acne-prone skin. Also less white heads from sunscreen. 2, It’s very light on skin, translucent, just like apply lotion. 3,NO balling/peeling.

Cons: 1.It’s a chemical and physical mixture sunscreen, might irritate very sensitive skin type. 2,Sheer finish, if I apply make up after this sunscreen, my face always gets oily in the afternoon.

It makes a good everyday comfortable acne-prone friendly sunscreen.

3, Shiseido Ultimate Sun Protection Lotion WetForce for Sensitive Skin and Children SPF 50+ $42/100ml

Whenever I need a sunscreen that is extremely waterproof, i always go for Shiseido Wet force, sensitive version came out last year in 2016. It’s physical sunscreen features with TITANIUM DIOXIDE 9.1% , Sunscreen ZINC OXIDE 19.3%.  I bought this one for a 5 days vacation by the sea, I didn’t get sunburn or even suntan during that 5 days(I did wear a golf hat and sunglasses at the same time)

Pros: 1, It’s extremely wet/sweat proof, I only applied once in the morning, no swimming but  a lot sweat during hiking, tissues didn’t take away any sunscreen. I’ve used wet force in the past, my experience is if you stay in the water whole day, for best result, it’s the best to reapply it(or any sunscreen) at every chance you can. However if you only plan to stay in the water less than half hour, it totally will do the job.

2, Excellent sun protection, for 100ml a bottle, I use it on whole body. 3, no balling/peeling.

Cons: 1, It leaves skin a heavy white cast. It has a thick texture between lotion and cream. 2, It doesn’t work with foundation, will lighten foundation’s color. 3,It’s very hard to take off. I used Eve Lom balm cleanser first then Drunk Elephant JuJu bar. I tried only Tatcha cleansing oil(10ml) sample, it hardly moves the white cast on top.

To sum up, it’s the best sports/outdoor/active sunscreen I came across so far, absolutely too heavy for everyday use.

Skin care for vacation

Here’s a picture of all the skin care products I brought with me for a 5 days  seaside vacation. Cleansers  are Eve Lom balm cleanser, Drunk Elephant Juju bar.
